The Halloween Edition: From The "Ugliest" House to the "Scariest" One

Well, it's Halloween once again friends!

I'm sure many of you are decorating your homes and I can't wait to hear about your themes and creativity this year. My 14-year-old, Kitty and I have been putting some finishing touches on our home and it's all ready for Trick or Treaters!

We also had an impromptu pumpkin carving party today.

Here's how that went...

These teens had some good tips, right?

I also learned about a trending painted pumpkin project, thanks to Kitty. I'm completely obsessed with the tutorial she and a friend watched and then executed after watching Tik Tok.

How cute are these painted pumpkins... on pumpkins?

But fun aside, Halloween can translate into real life nightmares in our homes year round. I figured this was a perfect time to share some of the best social media sites I've stumbled upon over the years that show just how scary DIY and home decor can be.

Disclaimer: beauty for home decor and design is in the eye of the beholder, so this is not meant to make anyone feel badly about anything, just to have some fun and share what's out there.

Enjoy, and you be the judge.

Ok!

Let's start with one of my favorite Instagram accounts.

Not sure how I stumbled onto, "Please Hate These Things" but I'm so glad I did. It is the gift that keeps on giving, for sure!

You will see things on this feed that you have never seen before, literally design you just can't unsee.

Like this recent post showing a "clever" way to make a dryer "fit" into a closet.

Or this post... a floating door.

Careful, that first step can be a killer!

There are many posts where simple design decisions didn't... "line up."

Again, everyone should design their space to look and feel like them but it's safe to say some of these designs are super unique and may not work for a wider spectrum of tastes.

Which brings me here.

The "unique nature" of some of these posts brought back a vivid memory from a few years ago.

A friend from mine from our NBC CT newsroom sent me an article from the NY Post. The home caught his eye because it was in Connecticut but it was also... well?

Interesting. Eye catching.

Go ahead and give that NY Post link a click... ;). It's also fun to look at the listing price and how it bounces around from millions to thousands back up to millions. It's one of a kind alright.

I leave with you a final "Halloween horrifying house" listing, that is mild mannered but certainly scary in its' own way. Especially if you've ever lived through a renovation, or a house that needed one.

To its great credit, this humble listing proves honesty is ALWAYS the best policy and a Florida realtor Philippa Main learned that first hand. Often realtors try to highlight the best parts of a home in a listing, calling attention to all that's going right with the house. In this case, the realtor was brutally humorously blunt and called this new home on the market as the "Worst on the Street." Granted, it's a bit terrifying at first blush, but her hilarious description, "the roof leaks the floor creaks and there's a terrible draft," made it almost endearing.

Oh, and by the way the reverse psychology worked because the listing went viral and had thousands of views and ended up with at least one offer!

LET'S DISCUSS

It's certainly a learning curve when it comes to getting our homes where we want them to be, and they are pesky things, aren't they? Throwing us curve balls constantly and keeping us on our toes.

But at the end of the day if our homes are what we want them to be, it doesn't matter how horrifying they may be to someone else.

Just have fun and break all the rules you want to, if that's what makes you happy ;)

Can you share any house horror stories of your own?

See you in the comments...

xx Kerri-Lee
